Nathan Carlson has been the new owner of Coal Creek Coffee since April 1, 2022. He and his staff continue to provide good coffee and baked goods for the local community and tourists.
Located in Coal Creek Canyon, right off of Highway 72, they have FT Organic coffee, free high-speed wifi, and a homemade snack or lunch. Carlson bought the business from previous owner Patty Gaeddert. The coffee shop has been in business for about 13 years.
Carlson has made a living as a software engineer. His software business is a start-up including web application development, but he has always wanted to own a coffee shop.
Coal Creek Coffee is right at the stopping point from his office and his home on South Beaver Creek Road. He was raised in Colorado Springs and then lived in Denver for three years before moving to Gilpin County.
The shop sells coffee from Red Silo in Arvada and is moving into craft espresso. He also has Italian sodas such as Strawberry Peach. He tries to only provide good quality products.
Manager Amber Danneman does the baking and makes cinnamon rolls, muffins, breads and breakfast burritos. Sourdough bread is the niche baked good for the shop.
One day featured strawberry rhubarb muffins, chocolate pecan scones, cinnamon raisin walnut rolls, cinnamon rolls and gluten and dairy free strawberry almond muffins. Another day featured cinnamon rolls, lemon raspberry bread, blueberry chocolate scones, chocolate pecan scones, gluten free lemon poppy muffins and gluten free chocolate raspberry scones.
Carlson said this is the only coffee shop from Golden to Nederland. He serves a lot of local customers and a lot of tourists stop by. The shop has a group of several seniors who come in every morning on weekdays to buy coffee and sit and chat.
Carlson listens to the community and hears new ideas of ways to improve. Most of the comments have been really positive.
He has seven employees and is growing a lot. His barriers include equipment updates and marketing to the local community.
