Canyon Sammy’s delivers in Coal Creek

Posted

John Scarffe, Coal Creek. Rob and Carol Scroggins have started a deli delivery service in Coal Creek Canyon. Residents of the Camp Eden area for seven years, they started the business in the first part of April when COVID-19 struck.

Canyon Sammy’s offers food delivery in Coal Creek Canyon on Wednesday’s at 4 p.m. for pickup at the CCCIA Community Center on Highway 72. The menu includes sandwiches, salads, soups, chilis, wraps and more. A menu is posted with “specials” changing weekly.

Prices are posted next to each item.

Customers can pay for their order with a credit card as they order or per PayPal through this link https://www.paypal.me/canyonsammys. Cash is gladly accepted upon delivery with exact change please. Weekly notices also go out on several Coal Creek Canyon Facebook pages.

All food is prepared at the Scroggins’ licensed kitchen at the Denver West Deli, 14143 West Denver Parkway, in Golden. They have owned the deli for 10 years.

The office building where they are located used to have about 700 residents, but now it is down to 100 people, and Scroggins’ business is down about 75 percent, so they decided to create another income stream.

After COVID struck, nobody wanted to leave their houses, so Denver West first shut down for two weeks, but everyone remained healthy. Rob decided to create a menu for Canyon Sammy’s, and after it was posted online, people were calling and it was pretty well received.

They started out delivering in Coal Creek on Mondays and Thursdays, but Mondays were slow, so they decided to change to Wednesdays. They don’t offer the complete menu from Denver West, but they do different specials just for Coal Creek.

Canyon Sammy’s offers chicken parmesan meals for a family of four for $40, which include four chicken breasts, salad, pasta and dessert. “It’s a lot of food,” Rob said.

They also offer sandwiches, tamales, quesadillas, soups and salads. Most entrees cost about $10. Carol does all the baking, including fruit tarts and homemade cookies and brownies.

“It’s been great,” Rob said. People wait at the Community Center or show up within a few minutes. “I don’t know what we will do when we have three feet of snow. We appreciate the support from people in the canyon.

“As permanent residents of Coal Creek Canyon, we have wanted to get involved with this great community and find ways to give back,” Rob said “We were happy to donate blueberry muffins for the July 4 pancake breakfast at the hall this summer.”

In support of small businesses, Sammy paid for the first 10 childrens’ haircuts at the new Salon Croi when it opened. “We love entrepreneurship and want to see others succeed in their endeavors to help build the community,” Rob said. With Carol’s help, Rob is a member of the Coal Creek Volunteer Fire Department Auxiliary, preparing and serving meals to the fire crews during training sessions as well as live events.

Customers can order through their website at http:canyonsammys.cloudwaitress.com/ by 12 p.m. on delivery day. Some family dinners may require a 24-hour notice and will be noted.
