Last Sunday, September 18, 2016, Gilpin County and Nederland equestrians competed in the second, and last, of the Belt Buckle Series. The first event was scheduled for July, but was cancelled because of the Cold Springs Fire on July 9, 2016. At that time, the Gilpin County Fairgrounds became an animal shelter for livestock rescued from the Ridge Road area.

For most of the summer since then, local riders have been training, working with their horses and honing their skills for the shows that rate their technique and speed. The winner gets boasting rights and a gorgeous event belt buckle to be worn with pride.

Riders come in all ages and abilities, many of them representing the Rising Sun Ranch, including owners Ed and Sheila Ranegar. Others are individual horse owners who relish the opportunity to see what their horses can do when pitted against other local steeds.

There are horses who respond perfectly when riding in places they are familiar with, but act out in a crowd, in a strange place. This is all part of a horse's training to trust his rider and perform confidently.

Even the calmest horse will throw a buck now and then or go off course when distracted.

On Sunday, the participants in all age levels competed in the saddle equestrian and the bareback equestrian show, the barrels, the pole bending, the keyhole and the flags.

After Sunday's event, the winner’s points from both of the Buckle Series were tallied to see who won the coveted buckle prizes, one for each age category.

 

The competing horses, all of them, won a drink of water, some hay and a good night's sleep in their own beds.
