NEDERLAND – Months after POWDR announced the sale of Eldora Mountain Ski Resort, the Town of Nederland has expressed interest in purchasing the Boulder County ski area. While the Town sees the acquisition as an opportunity to enhance local recreation, economic development, and sustainability, residents and skiers have mixed opinions on the proposal.
Facebook users have referred to the Town’s lack of funding for other projects. Some have pointed out that Nederland lacks its own police force, so how could they purchase and manage a ski resort?
Nederland envisions the acquisition as a chance to prioritize community values, offering year-round activities like concerts, night skiing, and summer events.
The plan could integrate workforce housing and childcare development, benefiting Eldora employees and local residents. Additionally, the Town sees the resort as a potential source of revenue to reinvest in public services, infrastructure, and community projects.
To address environmental concerns, Nederland proposes using renewable energy and improving snowmaking systems to counter the effects of climate change.
The Town also hopes to position Eldora as a hub for cultural and recreational activities, fostering a stronger connection between the resort and its surrounding community.
Skiers at Eldora Mountain Resort had something to say about Nederland’s interest in buying the ski area.
Maddie Harris of Boulder thinks local control could bring exciting changes. “That would be sick,” she said, hoping for fewer crowds and perks for Boulder County residents.
Taylor Willow, a skier from Ward and an Ikon pass holder, expressed cautious optimism. “I’ve read some of the information from Nederland. I like the idea of enhancing recreation in Boulder County, especially in summer, but I’m curious if Eldora would stay on the Ikon pass,” Willow said. Despite this uncertainty, she added that she would still consider buying an Eldora-specific pass.
The Town of Nederland is still exploring the idea, but they want to hear your thoughts. Have an opinion? Reach out to Town Administrator Jon Cain at townadmin@nederlandco.org or share your perspective at an upcoming Board of Trustees meeting. Let your voice be part of the conversation!
