GILPIN COUNTY - On a sunny but chilly Saturday morning, 53 runners and walkers turned out for the Gilpin County Community Center’s third annual Turkey Trot 5K Fun Run/Walk. With temperatures around 40°F, it was the perfect way to bundle up, get moving, and burn off those Thanksgiving leftovers while supporting a great cause.
This event has come a long way since its humble beginnings as a staff-only fun run three years ago. Recreation Supervisor Joline Logan, who helped organize the event, shared a little history and mentioned how excited she is to see it grow. Every dollar of the $25 entry fee goes straight back to the community center to support its programs and services.
The course looped around the center and through the surrounding trails, with staggered starts for everyone from solo runners to families with kids, and plenty of pets, too. The multi-purpose room gave the runners some respite from the cold and participants received snacks and commemorative t-shirts.
Adding some extra fun to the event, community center employee Daizsa Caldwell completed the run dressed as a turkey, joined by her coworker Sam Morehead. Talk about team spirit!
With its growing turnout, the Turkey Trot feels like it’s on its way to becoming a Gilpin County tradition. It’s a fun, easygoing way to get together with the community and do something good for a place we all value. If you missed it this year, keep an eye out next Thanksgiving weekend.
