The first luxury hotel in Boulder

There is a lot to be said about Colorado history, but when one can experience it firsthand, the severity and beauty of bygone years quickly come back to life. From the moment the valet grabbed the keys, the unforgettable moments began.

Upon entering, I couldn’t help but notice that the lobby at the Hotel Boulderado is undoubtedly reminiscent of the past. It was no surprise to learn that on New Year’s day 2022, the hotel celebrated its 113th year. I marveled at the manually-operated elevator near the check-in desk. It’s one out of five Otis elevators of its kind still functioning and the only one in the state. Yes, I got to ride in it.

After my Otis elevator ride, it was time for dinner. There are two restaurants on-site to choose from, The Corner Bar or Spruce Farm & Fish. I went with the latter. Between the Calamari and dipping sauce, the Grilled New Zealand Lamb Loin, and the heavenly drops of mashed potatoes, I had enough to eat for three people. And it was all worth it.

After dinner, I allowed curiosity to lead me to the basement, where another piece of history waited to intrigue me; an underground speakeasy lounge, License No. 1, with pool tables, a music room, a bar, and decor and lighting that transport you to the 1960s. Be sure to have your I.D. handy. You can’t get in without one. You’re going to want to enjoy a libation in this atmosphere. Don’t forget to ask how it got to be named License No. 1.

During the hotel’s many renovations, artifacts have been discovered, including photographs and original furniture. What’s admirable is that they aren’t destroyed or stashed in a storage shed. All of the items find a home in the building. Many of which live in the hotel’s historic wing.

You can learn about the Hotel Boulderado’s history by grabbing a pamphlet at the check-in desk and heading to the third floor for a self- guided excursion. Luckily, I had the pleasure of meeting the hotel’s historian and receiving a private tour.

I want to share all the details I learned with you. Unfortunately, my time is up. I will leave you with this: the hotel continues to receive antiques that have lived with Boulder families for centuries. There are hidden facts about the hotel, its first visitors, its architects, and the impact it has had (and continues to have) on Boulder that will astound any history buff.

The right people seem to be running this spectacular hotel. Not only do they appreciate the stories that have given the hotel its charming reputation, but they respect it. Needless to say that The Hotel Boulderado is the sum of Boulder, Colorado, history, class, and a modern experience sprinkled with the beauty of what once was.
