The beauty in great decision-making

PEAK TO PEAK - Regardless of how I feel about someone, I would never intentionally hurt them. It’s not my nature. I’m an empath filled with compassion and patience. I accept everyone as they are, without judgment, even if I’m not given the same respect.

Recently, I made a decision that might have disturbed the peace in the life of someone dear to me. Nonetheless, the decision had to be made. So, I made it and then drove into the mountains to clear my head.

I made several stops, taking photos and journaling when the mood struck. Sitting by a creek, my journal fell and as I grabbed it, it opened to an entry I wrote in 2020. Reading the entry took me back to Thursday, September 24, 2020.

It was the season of Colorado’s largest wildfires. Naturally, it was hazy. Yet, the scenery couldn’t have been more beautiful. County Road 50 is on the list of dangerous roads, so it closes between November and June. Its dangerous status also makes it a very scenic mountain road in Grand County.

I’m unsure what makes it dangerous. Perhaps it’s drivers speeding around the endless curves. County Road 50, also known as Church Park Road, is a gravel road that climbs 10,377 feet above sea level. It’s nestled within the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, so expect beautiful scenery at every turn.

Four-wheel drive is highly recommended on County Road 50. There are sections of the road where even in summer, you’ll be glad you had a 4x4. The 24.2 miles it took to drive it from one end to the other was well worth the drive to Grand County.

When I got home, I opened my digital photo library and scrolled through the images I took that day. This is part of the benefit of taking so many photos. When your memory fails you, photos are a great way to remember.

I relived my County Road 50 trip via my journal and my photographs. Then, I sat on my couch with the fire roaring, tea in hand, and reflected on my decision. It was still evident I made the right one.

It wasn’t a difficult decision, because honesty and truth are never difficult for me. I only felt bad about the disappointment I just instilled in someone. I continue learning many lessons, and the lesson that forced me to make this decision is that just because two people are great doesn’t mean they’re great together.

From Fraser, from Highway 40, turn west on County Road 5. Turn the only way you can on Church Park Road. Follow the road through its curves and beauty until you reach Highway 40 in Hot Sulphur Springs.
