As the mountain air becomes a little more crisp and the leaves begin to change, our taste buds begin to dance at the prospect of the delectable bounties that Autumn provides; of warm pie, of cinnamon and clove, of apples and of pumpkins. And just in time for the changing of the seasons, a new event is set to celebrate lovers of everything confectionary.
The Mountain-Ear’s Taste of the Peaks presents a Gourmet Baking Contest and Sale to take place on Friday, September 15, starting at 5 p.m. at Very Nice Brewing Company, located in the Caribou Village Shopping Center, 20 Lakeview Drive Unit 112.
This is the perfect chance for anyone with a secret five-star family recipe, for any home baker or professional, any hobbyist or novice with a love for the craft, to pick up their spatula and put their tastiest treats to the test, and all for a good cause!
The categories for the contest are Breads, Cookies, Cakes, Pies, and Preserves; there is no fee for entry and contestants are urged to enter in as many categories as they like. Contestants must include a list of ingredients with their entries, and the use of marijuana as an ingredient is prohibited.
Entries by contestants will be judged anonymously and on four criteria: Presentation, taste, texture, and aftertaste. The winning entries in each category will be auctioned off to those in attendance, with 100% of the proceeds being donated to the Nederland Food Pantry.
As judges and those in attendance will all be lucky enough to taste each entry in every category, to later bid on those that win, contestants are asked to bake two of every intended entry, one for tasting and one to be auctioned, or, if having won in a category, to arrange with auction winners a time for delivery of the winning item.
If you’re interested in being a part of this event, bring your entries to Susan at Very Nice Brewing Company before 5 p.m. on September 15. If you’re more of a connoisseur than a baker, come by, try one of Very Nice’s excellent beers, and enjoy tastings of each entry before the winners are announced and the auction begins.
If you have any questions about the Gourmet Baking Contest and Sale contact Barbara Hardt at The Mountain-Ear at 303-881-0365.
