On Monday, June 24, at approximately 9:35 p.m., Boulder County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to Gregory Canyon at the base of Flagstaff Road for an active wildland fire started by suspected fireworks. Responding fire crews led by City of Boulder Fire-Rescue were able to extinguish the spreading fire, limiting the damage to an area approximately 100 feet by 100 feet.

A 21-year-old male suspect was located near the scene and subsequently arrested for second degree arson. He has been lodged at the Boulder County Jail. His name and photograph are being withheld pending additional investigation.

Boulder Fire-Rescue, Boulder County Sheriff’s Office, Boulder Police Department, and Boulder Open Space & Mountain Parks responded to the incident.

The base of Flagstaff Road was temporarily closed during the incident but has since been reopened.

As we approach the Fourth of July holiday weekend, the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office urges all residents and visitors to be mindful of the heightened fire danger in our area. Please take extra precautions to minimize potential ignition sources, including:

• Avoid using machinery that creates sparks, such as lawnmowers, chainsaws, and welding equipment, especially in dry grassy areas, near wooded regions, and on windy days.

• Refrain from using fireworks.

• Properly extinguish campfires and dispose of cigarettes.

Additionally, please stay aware of any fire restrictions that may be enacted and keep up-to-date with current conditions, as they can change rapidly.
