Students venture to State Capitol

Posted

In February, some friends and I from school attended an event called TeenPact. Ever heard of it? TeenPact is an organization for kids to learn about government. This event is exciting, very educational, and is built on a Christian world-view.

Students ages 8-12 attend a day-long state class. For the older kids, ages 13-19, there are more in-depth classes that last four days. The preparatory homework for the state classes included researching the local representative and senator, defining some terms of government, and writing your own bill. When students turn in their homework, then the fun begins! For example, the bills students write can be either funny or serious matters. Some of the serious topics this year were on abortion, school safety and preserving the earth. One of the more lighthearted bills was introduced by a student who thought Colorado should increase the amount of Chick-fil-A restaurants.

Throughout the day students were engaged in worship songs, walks through the capitol, learning about the different branches of government, and role-playing in their own legislative session. After a student has completed the four-day class they are eligible to participate in TeenPact Alumni Events. Those events are hosted by camps and universities throughout the United States.

While attending TeenPact will have to wait until next year, homeschoolers are able to go to the Capitol on April 13. Homeschool days at the capitol are another great opportunity for students to learn more about their government. These families will be spending the day around fellow homeschoolers from all around the state. At this event attendees learn how bills become laws, and about the history of their nation and state. More information on this event can be found at https://chec.org/events/homeschool-day-at-thecapitol/.

I believe that having a knowledge of our government’s workings is a useful tool in a student’s life. Having an understanding of the state’s laws, how they are made, and understanding your rights as a citizen is helpful for anyone throughout their life. If a career within the government is pursued, then the experience and knowledge gained through one of these events would be a great advantage.
