Barbara Lawlor, Wondervu. A fire ignited by a candle in a wood shed next to a Wondervu home destroyed most of the building. What was left standing sustained smoke and water damage.
Coal Creek Canyon, Nederland, and Timberline fire districts responded to the scene along with Boulder Sheriff’s Office and Gilpin County emergency workers. Victims Advocates and Red Cross came to give assistance to the residents. No one was injured in the fire.
Around 2:30 p.m., a neighbor called 911 reporting smoke and flames visible from the garage/shed on the west end of the house. When firefighters arrived the shed was fully engulfed in flames and nearby trees were on fire. The structure is located across the street from the Wondervu Cafe.
Firefighters worked on keeping the flames from spreading into the forest. They attacked the house as the structure caved in on itself, sending flames moving under the roof. Although part of the structure was still standing, the house is a total loss.
Coal Creek Canyon Fire Protection District Fire Marshal Duane Harkwell said the homeowner had gone into the wood shed with a candle and then left it behind. The fire began in the shed, moved up into the roof and spread to the rest of the house.
Coal Creek Canyon was shut down west of the fire area to eastbound traffic and east of the fire to westbound traffic until after 5 p.m.
