I’m John McGinley and I write the monthly weather summary for The Mountain-Ear. I have been writing this column since 1988, more years than the age of some of our staff. I took over the column from CU meteorologist Brian Gross, working for Kay Turnbaugh.
Nederland has some of the most interesting weather extremes and is always a source of wonder each month. My previous publishing experience has been mostly scientific papers and contributions to books.
My wife Lynda and I live in the Big Springs neighborhood. I have been keeping weather observations since I was 10 years old (65 years). I have compiled a 55-year data base for Nederland from my records and other observations by cooperative observers. So weather has been my primary hobby for many years. After college I managed to make meteorology a career in NOAA and the USAF.
As a retiree I have lots of time for hobbies, including music, sailing, biking, and occasionally teaching weather related topics.
As far as future plans with The Mountain-Ear, I suppose I will continue to write the monthly weather column until they have to pry my cold, dead hands off my sling psychrometer.
