GILPIN COUNTY - The Very Nice Brewing Company in Gilpin County was overflowing with patrons on March 9 when the brewery held their 1st Annual Chili Cook-off.
Twenty-three participants submitted slow cookers, filling the tables to a breaking point (literally) with both red and green chilies. The chilis ranged in intensity from mild to smokin' hot, and all were delicious!
The $540 raised from the sales of delectable bowls of chili was donated to the Timberline Fire Protection District (TFPD). Members of the TFPD were challenged with judging entries, which proved difficult because of the quality of the submissions.
After much deliberation and multiple tastings, first prizes were awarded to Jacqueline McGrane for her incredible red chili entry, while Brandon Johnson was awarded the top prize for his green chili submission. Coming in second place were Kimberly Fry for her red and Angel O'Grady for the green chili category.
Ultimately, it was determined that everyone present—cooks, judges, and the many tasters present—were all winners in this first of many (we hope) events. VNBC owner Jeff Green added to the occasion by grilling up hot dogs wrapped in buns that were available to be smothered in chili.
