In prior articles I’ve written about the importance of writing a Pet Will when you have pets. A Will helps ensure they are cared for in case of your inability to care for them or when you leave this life. Some people think this a crazy concept; while others whole heartedly embrace their pets and leave them an inheritance under rule of their pet’s paw.
Let’s start with Gunther III who inherited $80 million when Countess Karlotta Libenstein died in 1991. The inheritance has continued to grow to $375 million and will be passed on to the next in line, Gunther IV keeping it in the family. There’s the poodle Toby Rimes who is said to have inherited $40 million from Ella Wendel in 1931; but unfortunately Toby passed away shortly after his person, leaving the estate to be divided up by several charitable institutions.
In 2007 the “Queen of Mean” Leona Helmsley left $12 million to Trouble, a Maltese Terrier who was known to be a biter. Trouble ended up having her inheritance whittled down to $2 million by a judge. Another Florida elite Conchita the Chihuahua inherited $3 million along with an $8.3 million Miami Beach mansion. Conchita enjoyed pearls, designer bikinis and was known as “The Boss.”
Dogs are not the only ones with parents of passion. Blackie won World’s Wealthiest Cat when his person passed leaving him a $13 million dollar estate in 1988; a Guinness World Record. Then there’s Tommaso, from Rome, a stray who was adopted by Maria Assunta. When she passed in 2011 she left Tommaso a $13 million dollar inheritance and Maria Assunta’s nurse agreed, prior to Maria Assunta passing, to care for the cat unaware of Tommaso’s soon to be inheritance.
Not to be left out as well, Gigoo the chicken inherited approximately $15 million when his person, Miles Blackwell, passed in 2001. There are many more stories of people leaving great inheritances to their pets; these are a few that stand out as the most extravagant and lavish. So if people start to laugh when you mention you have a Pet Will, just show them this article!
