the forest

Some words for the week
tree frost like sprayed crystal
frozen green pine needles
snow globed in sun shone ice
I work in the winter morning
my breath as thick as cloud
the forest silent
the pines perfectly straight
how can the world be so still
I wonder as I shovel
how can the sky
and the still showing half moon
hang like paintings
in the thawing air
cars pass on the road below
sloshing mountain melt into dirt
and the pines
are perfectly straight
pinstripes of grey bark
and cold ground
as the first bird I’ve seen today
cuts over some branches
and disappears
