NEDERLAND - On Monday, May 19, the Peak to Peak Chamber of Commerce hosted an informal gathering at Busey Brews Brewery for those interested in learning about and planning for the Sundance Film Festival which is coming to Boulder in January of 2027.
Those attending included Natalie Duplessy, President of the Chamber and owner of Peace, Love and Cake; Nick Goins of the Makeshift Film Group; Andrew Dewart, Chair of the Nederland Downtown Development Authority; Amy Skinner and Richard Brandon of Peak to Peak Counseling; Anjaneya Sardonicus, secretary of the Chamber and with Good People Tree Service; Guy Falsetti with the Backdoor Theatre; Jill Dreves of the Wild Bear Nature Center; Chris Kelley with The Mountain-Ear; Max Marschhausen of TEENS, Inc.; and Celia Wilson with The Meandering Moose Vacation Rental in Gilpin County.
Goins initiated the discussion, explaining that he had been in communication with representatives of the Sundance Film Festival as well as those who were part of the process of bringing the festival to Boulder. Goins testified in support of bringing the film festival to Colorado.
The vision Goins expressed was that the Peak to Peak region could piggyback on Boulder happenings by planning events in Nederland. Beyond that, it would also be beneficial to businesses in the area. One hope was that films could be presented in area locations, like The Backdoor Theatre, the Stanley Hotel, and others.
This was primarily a brainstorming session and there are no solid plans that are in place at this time. However, all in attendance were excited to delve into possibilities for getting involved and continuing to meet and plan.
Marschhausen said that TEENS, Inc. has numerous talented youth who could add a lot to the artistic focus involved in these types of events. Dreves added that the new nature center would be a beautiful place to hold receptions or other activities. It is hoped that additional persons and businesses would support a "sister festival" in the area.
Skinner volunteered that it is important to present "an intentional united front" if we are to be successful. All agreed that it is vital to be organized in advance and prepared for contingencies in order to have smooth-flowing activities and enjoyment for local residents and visitors alike. Having plenty of volunteers and buy-in from the community are essential elements for a successful event.
While there is no set date to regroup, anyone interested in participating should follow social media for announcements to learn more.
