NEDERLAND - The Nederland Fire Protection District’s (NFPD) professional firefighters and medical personnel will be hosting a Community CPR Course on Saturday, January 18, 2025. But the course isn’t just for those who require certification for a job. The American Heart Association’s (AHA) Heartsaver courses are offered to “anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.”
The AHA’s CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) and AED (automated external defibrillator) Course prepares participants on how to recognize when someone is suffering from cardiac arrest, and how to administer emergency care until EMS arrives.
This course teaches how CPR administered correctly can improve survival; how to recognize when someone needs CPR; how to perform CPR and use an AED on an adult and a child; and how to perform CPR on an infant.
Participants in the course will also learn to properly describe and demonstrate to others how to perform CPR and use an AED.
The course also teaches the “Chain of Survival,” which is the chain of actions to be made in order to maximize the chances of survival for someone suffering from sudden cardiac arrest, with each “link,” or action, being integral.
The AHA’s version of the Chain of Survival dictates that bystanders first activate the “emergency response system” once they immediately recognize cardiac arrest, which includes calling 911, and sending someone to retrieve the nearest AED.
Second, the bystander administers early CPR with an emphasis on chest compressions; and third, once an AED is available begin administering rapid defibrillation.
The AHA Heartsaver CPR AED Course, performed by the NFPD, will be hosted at the station, located at 650 West 4th Street, on Saturday, January 18, 2025, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The course costs $50 per person and includes a textbook and CPR mask. A certification card is awarded for completion.
