Lost shaker of salt found at Gilpin victory

You needed to inquire at the concession stand to see about ordering a “Cheeseburger in Paradise” for the Gilpin Eagles’ volleyball match against the Dawson Mustangs on Jimmy Buffet Night, September 14.

Varsity Coach Topher Rouse was granted a special favor from his girls in allowing him to name that week’s theme. Parrothead Rouse, JV Coach Sunny Vincent, C Team Coach Joe Wuchter, and Eagles’ supporters wore their favorite tropical shirts in honor of the recently departed musician. Someone left a lost shaker of salt at the gatekeepers’ table.

“We began the first game against Dawson School missing some of our serves, but our passing was good,” noted Coach Topher Rouse. “We hit more aggressively than we had in our last couple of matches.” Gilpin took the game 25-22.

The second game went much as the first had with the Eagles winning 25-21. Improving each time, Gilpin made it a sweep in the third game, 25-19. “The last two games were cleaner and that showed up in the score,” said Rouse.

Elise Vincent and Jiselle Osteboe led the team with 12 and 7 kills respectively. Osteboe also added 4 blocks. Jordanna Gagnon and Joei Sutton each had 4 serving aces. Elise Vincent and Kailee Starkey registered 7 digs. Twelve assists apiece were credited to Sterling O’Sullivan and Jordanna Gagnon.

The Gilpin Eagles’ next home game will be against Heritage Christian on September 28 followed by Clear Creek, October 3. October 17, they play Denver Christian and wrap up their season versus Lyons on October 24.
