Keema Aloo (Ground Beef And Potatoes)
Here’s another warming winter dish. It’s a little more complicated than many of the recipes, but well worth the additional effort.
Ingredients:
1 pound ground beef or lamb
2 large potatoes, diced
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 tomatoes, chopped (or about 2/3 can of diced tomatoes)
2-3 green chilies, slit (optional; adjust to taste) or use a few slices of canned peppers
4 cloves garlic, minced
1-inch piece ginger, grated (or about 1 tsp ground)
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon coriander powder
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon garam masala
Salt to taste
2-3 Tablespoons cooking oil
Fresh cilantro, chopped (optional; for garnish)
Water as needed
Instructions:
In a large skillet or pot, heat the oil over medium heat. Add the cumin seeds and let them sizzle for a few seconds.
Add the chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown. Stir in the garlic, ginger, and green chilies, cooking for another minute until fragrant.
Add the ground beef or lamb to the pot, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until the meat is browned and no longer pink.
Stir in the chopped tomatoes, coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Cook until the tomatoes soften and the oil starts to separate from the mixture.
Add the diced potatoes to the pot, mixing them well with the meat and spices. Pour in about 1 cup of water, cover the pot, and let it simmer on low heat for about 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are tender.
Once the potatoes are cooked through, sprinkle garam masala over the dish and mix gently. Garnish with fresh cilantro if desired.
