Barbara Hardt & John Scarffe, Gilpin County. Last week, the community lost two firefighters to a very serious and deadly accident. Cody and Shelby Allen were found in their home on Friday, December 11, 2020, deceased. Their dogs were by their sides, also deceased. As reported from the Gilpin County Coroner’s Office, the cause of death has been determined as accidental carbon monoxide poisoning. This case is still under investigation by the Gilpin County Sheriff’s Office.
Cody Allen had been with the Central City Fire Department as a volunteer since July of 2009, and was recently hired full time to the position of lieutenant.
Shelby Allen was a member of the Central City Fire Department as a volunteer since February 2016. Both Cody and Shelby’s families have been members of this community for many years.
They grew up in Gilpin County, met, married two years ago, and were looking forward to raising their family in Gilpin County.
Upon learning of the tragic news of two Central City firefighters, TFPD joined with Gilpin County Sheriff, Black Hawk Fire, Central City Fire, Golden Fire, Gilpin Ambulance, and Gilpin County officials in an Honor Escort procession to the Jefferson County Coroner in Golden on Friday morning. Approximately two dozen people including family and friends, gathered to pay their respects to Cody and Shelby Allen.
An Honor Guard has been in place at the mortuary. Both are recognized as Fallen Firefighters.
Services will be held on Friday, December 18, 2020, at 11 a.m. at Flatirons Community Church West, 24887 Genesee Trail Rd., Golden, Colorado 80401.
Gilpin County will have two large screen TV’s setup at the Gilpin Fairgrounds to livestream the service.
A procession will leave the church afterwards and cross the Central City Parkway, pass through Black Hawk and end at the Gilpin Fairgrounds.
