NEDERLAND - The gallery’s title, Mountain Goat Tees, may seem counterintuitive, but this everyday workplace holds the original, one-of-a-kind jewelry designs created by metalsmith Helene Arendt.
Arendt works primarily in sterling and fine silver, often including gold, copper, and brass in her pieces.
Each piece is unique—no two are ever exactly alike—but she tells prospective purchasers that the basic design style in each can be replicated. “Once a piece is sold, there is yet another waiting to be created.”
Her creations are inspired by her metalsmith grandfather, “Opa,” who encouraged her to see the particular beauty in nature. She began working in a corner of his workshop, when she cut, rolled, and sawed brass to create her first work of metal art. “The sound of age old methods of silversmithing can be heard in my shop every day as I hammer, saw, pierce, file, forge and solder these metals into my own creations.”
See her work on her website, www.CSBmetalsmith.com, or on Facebook. Her studio, Mountain Goat Tees in Nederland, is at 92 E 1st Street Unit C.
