Meet Gilpin High School senior Sarah Lovett. She has lived in Gilpin County since she was a baby. She shares, “it was also a great school to grow up in because it was safe, and the small class sizes helped me succeed academically.”
Some of Sarah’s fondest elementary school memories include playing “roundies” on the playground and having Axolotl as a class pet. Her favorite middle school memories consist of playing competitive sports for the first time.
Sarah’s sports experiences are volleyball in ninth, tenth, eleventh and twelfth grade. As well as track in tenth and eleventh grade and ski team in twelfth grade. She has been an active member of the Student Council and the National Honor Society in the tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grades.
During her junior year, she worked at the Cidery Tap and Tavern in Idaho Springs as a Hostess. She says it was a good experience to learn about the service industry and people in general.
With an Academic Achievement Award and Pathfinder Award from the University of Oklahoma, and a scholarship from the Daughters of The American Revolution, Sarah plans to earn a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, with the possibility of a Master’s.
Sarah has enjoyed the journey of growing into a young adult and learning more about herself. “The most important thing that I have learned is that a work ethic can take you a long way in high school; participate in more than just school itself - become part of a community.”
She has loved taking AP Literature and AP United States History, “because they challenged my creative thinking and time management skills.”
Heather Newman has been Sarah’s favorite teacher “because of her honest character and ability to teach hard science subjects to the point beyond proficiency. Her kindness and motivational attitude kept me going through her challenging classes.”
Sarah has found appreciation with friends like Tommie DiMauro who made her school career better because of their connection and ability to help each other. Though they didn’t have classes together, Sarah loved recapping together at the end of class.
Some advice Sarah shares about high school is “high school is not hard; people make it difficult because they are resistant to change, opening their minds, and creating helpful habits for themselves.”
Sarah believes that “all it takes is a little creativity and a strong work ethic to make it through high school. The most important thing I have learned from my high school career is the importance of developing healthy relationships and realizing that the work will be temporary, but family and friends go beyond graduation.”
Sarah will miss competitive sports and the community she found by being a part of so many great teams. From Eagles Nest to Gilpin High School, Sarah Lovett joins the Graduating class of 2023. Congratulations!
