The Gilpin County School Board met on June 15, 2021 at 6:30 p.m. in the school auditorium, earlier than normal in order for public response to the 2021/2022 budget. Board Secretary/ Treasurer Tracy Krug asked about spending and revenues from Black Hawk, as well as state and county taxes.
The regular meeting started at 7 p.m. with Superintendent Dr. David MacKenzie and Board members congratulating the high school baseball team for the end of the season tournament. Both boys’ and girls’ teams have broken some of their personal bests and school records on the new field.
A new teacher has been hired, and full-time staffing for next year is complete.
The Board approved budget resolutions for 2020/2021 and resolutions for 2021/2022 school years. No budget deficit is planned.
The Board approved the bid of Sturdy Steel of Waco, Texas, for a new 600-seat bleachers and press box structure.
Dr MacKenzie discussed how the seven-year capital improvement project is almost complete without needing voters’ approval of a bond issue. Safety projects included parking lot paving with directionals for safety; installation of fire doors, magnetic hallway doors, and security doors; upgrading the playground equipment; replacement of older windows in the elementary wing; and the application of safety film to all windows. The sports field and track were also improved to be safer. From now on, the field can be used for many different purposes, such as the graduations of the classes of 2020 and 2021.
Dr. MacKenzie announced that the Gilpin County Health Department is planning a mask-wearing review on July 1, 2021.
The Board appreciated the District Accountability Committee Chairperson Julie Hanssen’s valuable contributions to the Committee for the past eight years, including chairing for the last two years.
The next meeting will be August 17, 2021, when the Board will discuss Health, Dental, and Vision Benefit renewals, monthly review of the pandemic status, teaching and learning plan updates, and 2021 voluntary Colorado State testing results.
