What is Electioneering? Electioneering refers to campaigning for or against any candidate and/or issue that is on the ballot. This includes the posting, use, or distribution of political signs, clothing, literature, or other items, physical or digital, or the activity of persuading people, spoken or written, to vote for or against a particular party, candidate, issue, or ballot measure.
In an effort to document historic electioneering policy, the Board of County Commissioners authorized the County Manager to create a documented Electioneering Policy, which was discussed on February 27, 2024. This policy is designed to establish a clear framework for the conduct of electioneering activities on real property owned by the County.
By delineating the acceptable place and manner for electioneering, this policy seeks to uphold the principles of free speech, while simultaneously safeguarding the interests and wellbeing of all County residents and visitors.
Excerpted prohibitions from Electioneering Policy:
• Electioneering and political activities may not be conducted on County property unless the individual or organization has been successfully granted temporary use of County property.
• Electioneering may not be conducted within 100 feet of an active polling location, which includes ballot boxes.
• County resources may not be used to conduct political activity.
• No person shall block any public official, public employee, or invitee from County buildings. This policy only applies to Gilpin County property.
