On Wednesday, June 16, 2021, fire crews battled a small fire burning on private land in Gilpin County.
Two helicopters responded to help fight the fire. The Columbia Chinook system includes a 2,800 gallon internal water tank with a 140-gallon retardant reservoir and a 12-foot-long, 10-inch diameter hover pump. Water can be dropped in less than four seconds and refilled in less than 60. Its Maximum Gross Weight is 28,000 lbs. with a 2,000 gal. fuel capacity. It is 60x90 feet (with the rotors operating) and 19 feet high. Fuel consumption is 400 gallons an hour. Cruise speed 120 knots. It can hold 19 passengers and requires 4 pilots to fly it.
The Smith Hill Fire was extinquished around 8:30 p.m.
