Excitement filled the air as the Gilpin County School Senior Class of 2023 stood around the gymnasium conversating, shaking hands, and posing for photos. Dark cloth draped over tables with black and gold decorations depicting the anxiety and happiness students expressed.
Five minutes to 11 a.m., the senior class lined up to make their grand and last entrance toward the football field, where parents and loved ones patiently waited to start whistling and clapping.
Gilpin School faculty and staff took their seats as the high school seniors followed. Before one word was spoken, it was easy to sense the numerous emotions stirring from the crowd. Valedictorian Aucklynn Sacco led the commencement exercises, singing the National Anthem.
Principal Alexis Donaldson offered a light-hearted speech filled with inspiring words of encouragement. The athletic and talented Trey Lindberg took to the stage, serving a plate full of laughs, just before salutatorian Skyley Ramsey delivered a series of empathic words to her classmates.
Sacco returned to the stage, addressing her fellow graduates with an empowering message for the journey they’re all about to embark on. Her words were received with many nods and even a few chuckles.
School counselor Kim Cobb delighted all parents and supporters, sharing the senior class’ scholarship awards and their plans. This year, Gilpin seniors received the most impressive number of scholarships, totaling well over $700,000 between the 27 graduating students.
Graduating high school comes with its fair share of rewards and challenges, which require an insurmountable amount of support. The graduates expressed their appreciation by gifting their supporters with a white carnation.
Emotions were enhanced as flowers were exchanged for hugs and a “thank you.” “I Will Always Remember You” played in the background until seniors returned to their seats. A few moments later, the presentation of diplomas began, and the cheering got even louder.
One by one, graduates received their certificates. Moments later, Donaldson stood at the podium as the drums rolled, or perhaps it was the heartbeats of all those present, and the official Gilpin graduates of 2023 were announced.
Gilpin County was overcome with the roar of cheers as caps and tassels flew high, creating a sense of relief, pride, and accomplishment. On Saturday, May 20, 2023, a new page was turned for Gilpin County High School seniors.
One of many milestones was reached this past weekend, and a new chapter has begun for these hard-working young adults. Whether you’re taking a gap year, going to college, are planning on entering the workforce, or are undecided, your community supports you.
Remember, everything worth having requires great effort, and the best story you’ll ever read is the one you’ll write. Congratulations, Gilpin County School Class of 2023!
