At a council meeting on April 11, Black Hawk City Council members Linda Armbright, Hal Midcap and Jim Johnson were sworn into another term as aldermen.
Judge Ronald W. Carlson swore in the council members, who all ran uncontested in March’s election. City council deemed them officially elected at a meeting on February 14.
The Council also introduced new fleet custodian Joseph Lopez to the city’s staff. Previously, Lopez worked for the Southwest Plaza Mall. He has a wife and a 13-year-old son, and counts fishing, riding horses, and hiking among his hobbies. During the same meeting, the council passed two measures to ensure that the Colorado Chef’s Association Cook-Off, which is scheduled for May 3, will go on as planned. A liquor license and special event license were both passed unanimously.
The event will include various chef teams from Black Hawk’s casinos in a cook-off. The proceeds of the competition will go to the Colorado Chef’s Association’s Apprenticeship Program.
The council also approved an initiative to donate, auction and dispose of surplus property that city departments no longer need.
After the police department moved to the newly constructed Emergency Operations Center in 2017, it did some “housecleaning,” according to Black Hawk Police Chief Stephen Cole. After consulting with other Black Hawk departments, Chief Cole realized that other departments also had excesses of office equipment.
The departments plan to auction off or donate a portion of the goods, and dispose of what remains.
The council also voted to reinstate two tax rebates — one sales tax which applies to retail items that are delivered to residential houses, and another use tax which applies to construction on residential projects within the city’s National Historic Landmark District.
Another rebate was passed, which waives the Use Tax on renovation of gaming facilities in Black Hawk.
The next meeting of the Bladck Hawk City Council will be Tuesday, April 25,. 2018 at 3 p.m. at 201 Selak Street, Black Hawk.
