GILPIN COUNTY – Gilpin County Commissioner Marie Mornis and her husband, Steve, joined the Gilpin Senior Lunch on November 15, 2024, to enjoy a healthy meal, visit with friends, and make a generous donation.
Senior Services Coordinator Mary Ellen Makosky expressed gratitude to the Mornises for their $5,000 donation. This financial support comes at a critical time, following a funding cut from Volunteers of America. The Gilpin County Senior Program, among other local non-profits, is facing budget reductions as post-pandemic recovery effort limits have impacted funding sources.
“They (Volunteers of America) took back the VOA van, so they’re taking the steps to reduce programs, so I just felt like I had to do something personally,” said Mornis.
Makosky noted that attendance at the Senior Lunch Program tends to drop during the winter months. However, there is still a disparity in the funds needed to sustain this program. This donation will directly support the continuation of these lunches, Makosky added.
Community members interested in more information or volunteer opportunities can reach out to Makosky at https://gilpincounty.colorado.gov/departments-offices/human-services/senior-program.
Makosky was eager to announce an upcoming event for seniors: the Annual Holiday Luncheon. To be eligible, attendees must be at least 60 years old and preferably Gilpin County residents.
This year, Ameristar Casino has generously offered to cater and host the celebration, which will take place on December 4 at 11:30 a.m. in the Banquet Room. Those planning to attend are asked to RSVP before Thanksgiving by calling 303-515-4292.
