Barbara Lawlor, Nederland.  You know you’re in for a good time when 30 seventh and eighth graders blend their eager voices in the sounds of the Rock and Roll Revolution. All of the energy, the rhythm, the awakening of the new kind of music that hit the baby boomers in the 60’s and 70’s was brought up close at the Nederland Middle Senior Choir Concert last Wednesday night.

The middle school sang the classics as if they just bounced off the pop charts yesterday; a modern generation paying homage to the musical groups that had their grandparents twisting and jitter-bugging.

The concert featured about 70 middle and high school students, the majority of them sixth, seventh and eighth graders who have taken to the choir with an enthusiasm that is contagious. One can’t help but laugh and join in singing.

The high school students make up the Festival Choir and the Loquations, NHS’s competition group that travels to auditions and wins awards.

Opening with “Rockin’ America,” the seventh and eighth grade students choreographed their own songs, moving about the stage and onto the floor, flowing from grouping to grouping as the songs changed, giving a bunch of students the spotlight. The singers exuded a sense of having a good time that drew the audience in.

Separate performances by the Festival Choir and the Loquations altered the mood, but left the audience in awe of the older student’s range of talent. Joining together in Axel F, the two choirs blended the harmonies that have made them one of the best high school choirs in the state.

The evening ended with the middle school students continuing with the rock them, “Party On, America.” It was the Nederland way of welcoming spring and showering the community with music.
