Barbara Lawlor, Boulder County. Kelley Wiggins, 37, has been charged with 10 offenses, including first degree murder, after he was accused last week of deliberately crashing the car he was driving that resulted in the death of Alexus Valentin, 21, of Boulder.
The collision occurred on Aug. 4, when Wiggins, a male passenger, two female passengers and a child, were involved in a rollover accident at the 37 mile marker of Boulder Canyon. Valentin was ejected from the Pontiac Firebird and died at the scene. The other three adults were trapped in the vehicle after it was bent around the tree it hit on the embankment. According to the state patrol, the firebird was traveling about 90 mph when it rolled.
Emergency workers performed a technical extrication, taking the vehicle apart piece by piece to free the trapped driver and passengers.
Two of the passengers were transported by flight for life helicopters.
Wiggins had life threatening injuries and was not tested for drugs or alcohol at the time. On Aug. 17, the second female in the vehicle reported to Boulder police that Wiggins told her he intended to kill Valentin and also wanted to kill the man in the front passenger side of the car, Ryan Hohlt, who owned the Firebird.
Wiggins has also been charged with three counts of attempted murder, first-degree assault, intimidating a witness, child abuse and three crime-of-violence sentence enhancers. He is being held on a $250,000 bond at the Boulder County Jail.
If convicted, Wiggins faces a mandatory life-in-prison without possibility of parole sentence. A preliminary hearing is set for Oct. 13. Wiggins was on felony probation at the time of the crash.
