Solving mysteries in Gold Hill: Left, several of the murder mystery cast members get into character as they pose for their close-ups. Right, the radio show “dress rehearsal” entices guests as they search for clues within the script. PHOTOS BY OMAYRA ACEVEDO[/caption]
The year? 1941. The day? Friday, October 31. The location? The Blue Bird Lodge in Gold Hill, Colorado. World affairs are dominated by Europe’s war as new threats grow that would soon involve the United States. The Japanese begin threatening Asia, and preparations for a different type of war abound.
Naively, dinner guests mingle as they enjoy hors d’oeuvres and adult beverages while anticipating who gets murdered, why, and who the murderer is. The dinner host enters, setting the scene and rules for his guests.
Guests are put into groups and given notepads and pens to jot down clues that will lead to solving the night’s murders. Immediately after the short introduction, the intensity in the room rises as more characters barge in, arguing over scripts, love, and a radio show.
The crowd learns they’re about to witness the rehearsal and live performance of the 6th episode of the smash hit, “The Black Mantis,” live from the KDED radio station. But is this a simple rehearsal and show? Or is something more sinister lurking in the shadows?
Ruthless behind the scenes interactions between the characters ensue during dinner. Guests become deeply tied to the mystery when screams and tears emerge from across the hall. A murder? Yes, the first of many.
Food, drinks, laughter, deceit, and misguided interpretations are experienced throughout the night as crimes are committed, doubt grows, secrets are discovered, and the characters’ motives are put into question.
