BLACK HAWK — Last week, the Board of Gilpin County Commissioners voted unanimously to reappoint The Mountain-Ear as newspaper of record. This is a privilege we take very seriously.
We have been a secondary newspaper of record for many years, in Gilpin County. We used to receive random public notices before we became an official Gilpin County newspaper of record.
And for one year, we were co-Newspaper of Record, alongside the Weekly Register-Call. At the end of that year, Gilpin County Commissioners appointed us as Newspaper of Record, after comparing our pricing, our customer service and responsiveness overall to the County.
We maintain offices in Gilpin County and Boulder County. The law considers us published in Gilpin County as well as in Boulder County. § 24-7-101, C.R.S. establishes that “Published” means a newspaper that maintains an office in the county to gather news, sell advertising, or conduct the general business of newspaper publications.
The Mountain-Ear has been locally owned and operated since October 25, 1977.
We are entrenched in the community. Many of our staff are on multiple local boards, where we regularly share important information about news of the county, including information about what people should be watching out for in local government, businesses news, school news, event news and more.
We are responsive to emails, phone calls, and other approaches. We are focused on sharing all of the news of all of the county (and beyond), including the important public notices that inform our residents what is happening in local government.
This is information from the letter I copied and sent to the Aldermen for the City of Central, upon being asked if we would submit a bid for the Newspaper of Record. The Alderman chose to retain the previous newspaper of record, despite the other newspaper being published in a different county and holding no office where general business of the newspaper is completed.
Our legal status aside—which is still disputed and still in court locally—our readership is higher, we have a full staff that monitors and prepares the notices, we meet all requirements of being a newspaper of record, and we believe in what we are doing.
Regardless, we wish the City of Central the best of luck. We will see you next year, with the same request, to provide the needed services for you.
If anyone would like to know what it means to be Newspaper of Record, and why we qualify, feel free to reach out to me personally. I am always available by email at info@themountainear.com.
