Ward Public Library sings with poetry

Poetry is a literary work in which feelings and ideas are given life by intense expression using style and rhythm. Poetry stems back thousands of years, from petroglyphs to lithographs and Old English to modern-day slang.

Though written and shared in various ways throughout its existence, there’s no denying the romanticism of poetry. Whether a sonnet, haiku, epigram, couplet, or anything in between, one’s heart can beat differently due to the sweet sounds of poetry.

Readings at the Ward Public Library began 45 years ago. Since then, it has been where many poets have honored the public with the first readings of their work, including renowned poet Sandy Karng, who has been writing poetry since her teens.

On Saturday, October 14, 2023, Karng gifted library visitors one of life’s beautiful gifts: a poetry reading. Before the official start, poetry enthusiasts filled the library, enjoying refreshments, pizza, and friendly conversations.

Between 7:30 and 8:30 p.m., Karng shared her poetry and the tales that inspired each poem she read. One after another, the rhythmic sounds of her words revealed her experiences and the emotions that came with those experiences, from her 20 years in India to her interactions with friends and neighbors.

Karng was born in New Haven, Connecticut. She majored in English Literature in college. She ran a poetry series in San Francisco and became a KGNU radio talk show host and poet.

Karng’s book of poems, Amrita, a Sanskrit word meaning “immortality,” is a book of stories, memories, artistry, compassion, and self-awareness, making it easy for adult readers of all ages to relate.

Karng’s detailed descriptions, wit, warmth, and the joy she feels for life became contagious throughout the evening, and it kept listeners wanting more. She described the Dalai Lama as sweet and lovable, but after Saturday night, there’s no doubt the description fits Karng equally the same.

The Ward Public Library is located at 66 Columbia Street, Ward.
