Celebrating a decade of “Very Nice” Nederland locals showed up in full force to show appreciation for Jeff and Susan Green and the anniversary of a decade of great beer and music. PHOTOS BY BARBARA HARDT[/caption]
Very Nice Brewing Company (VNBC) celebrated ten years of “slinging suds” at their Nederland brewery and taproom on Saturday, October 29, 2022, showing their immense gratitude to the community by serving up their familiar brews and providing free local snacks, grilled hot dogs, and live music.
“Our joy when we wake up and breathe the mountain air and then head into our little brewery in Nederland is overwhelming at times,” VNBC’s owners, Jeff and Susan Green, posted on their official Facebook page. “We owe so much gratitude to the people we have worked with and the community we have worked for over the past ten years; it is more than words can adequately convey.”
Jeff left a career as a quality engineer in the Biopharma/Medical Device field and Susan left her commercial real estate career behind to invest their time and money fully on the dream of owning and running their own business. Ten years and over 1,000 small batches of beer later it is clear that the risk the Greens took to open their brewery was worth it, as VNBC has become a quintessential communal hub, representing the artistic and hospitable spirit of Nederland.
“Our brewery exists first and foremost on the joy that results from community gathering around the ancient art of beer and the institution of the neighborhood pub,” Jeff Green elaborates. “People from all walks of life gathering and forgetting about their differences and embracing commonalities.”
Jeff Green has been VNBC’s sole brewer for the past decade, working in small batches to artfully focus on the flavors of his selection of satisfying styles. For their tenth anniversary Green created “X,” an elegant cacao cherry stout that produced deep bitter notes from the pure cacao, with its natural sweetness triggered and highlighted by Door County, Wisconsin cherries, all combined with a dark, rich stout.
VNBC also features tasty and unique collaborations, such as “Valto,” a porter featuring local Salto coffee. Green also enjoys the storied history of his craft, with his thirst for education enabling his art and allowing him to create brews inspired by ancient techniques and unique ingredients, such as the “Greener’s Gruit” and the “Very Nice Kveik.”
On Saturday, October 29, as Susan Green and her helpful staff served hundreds of customers throughout the day while local music by NoGo Gillbillies and Stone-Hall rocked their taproom, Jeff Green grilled up to 300 hot dogs, given away as a courtesy to those who have supported VNBC over the last decade.
The community showed their appreciation for the Greens and for VNBC with smiles, laughter, and glasses raised to toast to another ten years.
