Halloween can be a time for scary stories, trick or treating, costume-making, baking, celebrations, and friendly competitions. But one organization is taking advantage of the ghoulish season and turning it into something more fun and meaningful.
The Vagabond Outdoor Club (VOC) is curating an environment for outdoor enthusiasts of all ages to find adventure, learn, teach, and be part of something bigger. The club is a hub that promotes what everyone in the community is doing.
Vagabond Outdoor Club supports the community by hosting fundraising events, various classes, workshops, and outdoor activities, and bringing awareness of environmental issues to everyone.
The club hosted its most recent event on Saturday, October 27, 2023, at the Union Congregational Church of Ward. Neighbors, family, friends, and ghouls united at the church for an evening of Halloween fun.
The $5 admission price included a bowl of chili, or guests could pay $10 to be a chili judge and try them all. Music entertainment included an open mic from 5 to 7 p.m., followed by performances by Minto, Kalynn, Zalen, Ella, and DJ M3dium.
Guests showed up, ready to drink, eat, laugh, and play the night away. Decorations and delightfully creepy hors d’oeuvre created the perfect ambiance for a great time. Colorful lights danced across the ceiling as some supporters danced across the dance floor while others shared conversations.
Holly Hughes won the chili contest while Oliver Zahn took first place for the best costume, dressed as Elmo. The event was a fundraiser for Nederland’s TEENS, Inc., a place empowering youth to make a difference in their community and their lives since 1997.
More than $400 was raised for TEENS, Inc.
Teens, Inc. is located at 151 East Street, Nederland. You can find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/teensinc, or you can call them at 303-258-3821.
