All Gilpin County School Board members met on October 19, 2021, at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium and on YouTube. All were thrilled to know that U.S. News and World Report selected Gilpin Schools Secondary in the top 30 percent of schools, at 109 of 641; and the elementary in the top 20 percent (in the state of Colorado).
School Board members mentioned that the football teams are almost at their end of season, with two more games on October 23 and October 29. Basketball season started on October 18.
Superintendent Dr. David MacKenzie discussed the State Assessment tests for Language Arts for grade 3, 5, and 7 and tests for mathematics for grades 4, 6, and 8, which were voluntary, so only a few took the tests. PSAT tests for grades 9, 10, and 11 were also voluntary. The goal for the school was to meet or exceed the state goals, which was close, according to Dr.MacKenzie.
The Board reviewed the survey about a possible change of the first day of school. The Board charged MacKenzie with creating school year calendars for the next two or three years.
MacKenzie said that on October 14, at Parent Teacher Conference night, Safeway provided 20 or more flu shots and five COVID boosters and at least three COVID shots. The Gilpin County Public Health also held a clinic.
MacKenzie mentioned a recent virtual meeting for State school superintendents with members of the Department of Public Health and State Department of Education, at which Governor Polis proposed vaccine clinics. Gilpin County Public Health has tentatively planned one for November 18. It will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. for ages 12-17, 18 year olds, and other adults. A voluntary participation for staff will be on November 11, for Moderna booster shots, pending approval.
On October 12 and 13, strong winds damaged the soccer goal.
All Board members were invited to attend the November 5, 10 a.m., dedication ceremony of the new power generator at the bus barn. MacKenzie expressed appreciation for United Power’s donation of the facility.
Elementary Principal Heather Huntoon reminded the Board of the planned Trick or Treat Street, which will be scaled down for safety for all students. Each class will have an assigned time to go to get candies from the PTA parents.
The next meeting of the Board will be on November 2, 2021, at 7 p.m., in the auditorium or on YouTube.
