The good news that the next three-mile segment of the Peaks to Plains Trail will be constructed between August, 2023 and 2025 was tempered by the bad news that the construction would entail overnight closures of US 6 in Clear Creek Canyon from CO 119 to CO 93.
Closures were scheduled to take place Sundays through Thursdays from 9 p.m., when traffic volumes are lowest. During the closures, traffic was planned to be detoured to I-70.
But now the overnight closures of US 6 through Clear Creek Canyon are being put on hold to accommodate nighttime paving work being done on the I-70 mountain corridor.
Peaks to Plains spokesperson Joy Wasendorf tells us that “With US 6 being the primary route used by material suppliers for this I-70 paving project, keeping US 6 open through the canyon has become a priority. The overnight closures for work on the Huntsman Gulch trail are expected to resume sometime in 2024.”
The daytime, single lane closures of US 6 just west of Tunnel 1 will continue as the next 3-mile long segment of the Peaks to Plains trail is built next to the highway. From 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday, flaggers are directing alternating traffic through the area while the eastbound lane is closed for equipment being used to build the trail and retaining walls. If needed, there could also be single lane closures on Saturdays from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Wasendorf assures us that information will be sent out before the overnight closures of US 6 through the canyon resume. For detailed information, sign up for Jefferson County “Notify Me” alerts at www.jeffco.us/list.aspx.
