Unveiling the Picnic Table Project

Posted

Nederland has long been known for its strong sense of community and creativity. Recently, an art idea took root that brings together both community and art, called the Picnic Table Project. Property owners, Dave and Vicky Poe approached the Nederland Public Art Committee with a simple suggestion - painting the picnic tables in the garden area behind the deli and the co-op.

To make this vision a reality, Dave and Vicky joined forces with TEENS, Inc., an organization dedicated to empowering local youth and families. TEENS, Inc. was involved in the advertising and promotion of the project and together they brought together a 50-50 blend of not just professional artists but artistically inclined townspeople.

The committee wasted no time assembling a talented group for the project. Local artist Casey Pyle was hired as the lead artist. Drawing inspiration from themes generated by a town survey conducted by the Nederland Public Art Committee, the table artists worked on the project from Monday, July 10 to Sunday, July 16. On Saturday, July 15, table artists were able to enjoy a grill-out picnic and each other’s company while visitors could walk and view the decorated tables. The Nederland Public Art Committee hopes to encourage visitors to come to the Art Garden next to the Nederland Community Gardens to see the artists’ work.
