Barbara Lawlor, Gilpin County. In a stunning upset in the Gilpin County Adult Co-Ed Softball League last week, the long-time champions, the Champs, who have been undefeated this summer, fell to the Misfits, the team at the bottom of the standings.
“We whooped ‘em good,” said John Cook, the Misfit coach. The Misfits are new this year, a group of former Ball Slingers and a gang of young men who have the hitting arms and are demonstrating their potential.
Tony Farace began the pitching and John Cook was the second pitcher.
It was a back and forth game until the last inning when the Misfits connected with their strength and drove the score to a 14-10 win.
Tony says he left the game with a huge smile on his face. If they were going to win their first game, it might as well be against the top guns. The Champs were 7-0 going into the fated game.
Three of last week’s games were cancelled because of lightning or a rain-muddy infield. Two other games managed to play around the storms.
The Players beat the Blue Sox, 10-7 and the Acer’s beat the Mean Machine, 11-1, putting the Acer’s into a tied first place position with the Champs.
But there are still many games to come and anything can happen, as has been proven in previous years.
On Tuesday, July 7, at 6 p.m. the Acer’s will play the Champs who will be eager for redemption. At 7 p.m. the Blue Sox will take on the Mean Machine.
On Wednesday, July 8, at 6 p.m. the Players will compete with Whistler’s Cafe and at & p.m. the Blue Sox will play the Acer’s.
The weather is settling down as we head into July and there is nothing that says summer as much as an evening at the ball field with friends and neighbors.
