Karen Gerrity, Nederland. At an all-staff meeting recently, town employees were given an overview of Human Resource policies and procedures, solutions to common IT issues, and information on ethics and confidentiality. They also reviewed and discussed how they were doing regarding safety.

In addition to these types of standard annual staff meeting agenda items, town employees were introduced to the topic “Adopting and Fostering a Culture of Kindness.” The working culture impacts an organization’s ability to achieve goals and successfully perform.
Staff learned that characteristics have been identified that result in successful workplace cultures such as effective leadership, a well-defined mission, free flowing communication between all levels, transparency, diversity (perspectives, experiences and skills), respect and excellence.
Town staff reviewed the Nederland Mission Statement which is as follows:
The mission of the Town of Nederland is to protect our unique identity and foster a safe and sustainable community through actions that are guided by a shared commitment to honesty, equity, fiscal responsibility, environmental stewardship and partnerships.
Those in attendance agreed that the mission is well-defined, and they couldn’t think of anything that is missing.
An area that town staff agreed could be strengthened is free flowing communication between all levels with both internal and external stakeholders. One of the ways to accomplish this, is to adopt and foster a culture of kindness. In order to do this, staff will strive to do the following:
Assume Positive Intent
Stay Curious and Ask Good Questions
Use Words Impeccably
Not Take Anything Personally
Show Up the Best They Can Each Moment
While these are lofty goals that will take focus and practice, town staff collectively set this intention.
Will you join town staff in this effort to promote a Culture of Kindness throughout the community? Team Ned could use your support. And if we fall down, extend a hand of understanding and help lift us back up onto the path of kindness. We will do the same for you.
