The Nederland 2023 Town Clean-Up Day began on Saturday, June 3, as early as 6 a.m., for some, as residents lined up at the Nederland Transfer Station and Recycling Drop-Off in trucks packed with their large trash items and hard to recycle materials, queued all the way down Ridge Road.
The Nederland Parks Department, Streets Department, members of the Parks, Recreation, and Open Space Advisory Board, of the Planning Commission, of Nederland’s Sustainability Advisory Board, and many more members of town staff volunteered for the event, led and organized by Parks Department Director Nicki Dunn.
The gates were opened at 8 a.m. Town Administrator Dr. Miranda Fisher directed residents to the several different stations for trash drop-off, including a row of dumpsters for general trash and large items like furniture, as well as stations for scrap metal and unpainted wood. Several vendors provided speciality trash removal services, such as Data Destruction, Onsite Electronics Recycling LLC, Eco- Cycle, and Resource Central.
The Nederland Fire Department was present for the event, handing out materials to inform residents about properly displaying their address signage. Wildfire Partners provided information about proper wildfire prevention and preparation.
Peak to Peak Endurance collected all of the bicycles that were being thrown away, many of which were in salvageable condition to be repurposed and donated. Homes by Jackie Jones not only supplied donuts and coffee for the volunteers, but offered donuts to the residents waiting in line parked down Ridge Road.
Setting a new Town Clean-Up Day record, the dumpsters for general trash were filled by 9:40 a.m. The vendors taking the hard to recycle materials reached full capacity by 10:30 a.m, and the entire event was over by 11 a.m.
“In ten years of doing this event I’ve never seen this happen,” Dunn told The Mountain-Ear, referring to the dumpsters becoming full so early, while she directed traffic and expertly handled what she referred to as the “controlled chaos” of the event.Thank you to all those from town staff and local government boards, and to those local residents who participated and volunteered to help make this year’s Town Clean-Up Day such a great success.
