GILPIN COUNTY — The Timberline Fire Protection District sent a mobile chipping team to the Colorado Sierra subdivisions the end of May to chip slash piles that residents had stacked at the side of the road.
The chipping operation was funded by a grant of $9,500 from the Clear Creek Watershed and Forest Health Partnership to promote defensible space.
Timberline was able to chip 168 cubic yards of slash in the Colorado Sierra Alpha, Beta, and Delta subdivisions between May 20, 2026, and June 3, 2026. In 27 chipping hours, the chipping crew removed slash fuel from 130 lots.
Andrew Stiffe, the Timberline Mitigation Coordinator, wrote that it was the equivalent of eight dumpsters of chips from potential fuel that is no longer around structures in the subdivisions.
The Timberline Mitigation Division offers free home ignition zone property assessments for all properties in the district and reduced rates to district property owners for mitigation work to create defensible space on their properties.
Contact Stiffe at 303-582-5768 x708 or fill out the form on their website (timberlinefire.com) for a free assessment. From the Home webpage, click on the Mitigation Division tab and the Free Property Assessment link.
