Summer Returns With Highs In The 80s
This summer we have had very few five-day periods with highs in the 80. Even though we are in mid August and expect cooler temperatures, we managed to have such a five-day string. The culprit was a big high pressure aloft to our west. This cut off the steady tropical moist flow that was in place the first half of the month allowing our atmosphere to heat up. Tuesday we hit 85F in Ned rivaling some of the warmest days we have seen all summer. With these warmer and drier conditions the fire threat increased. A short-lived fire did occur west of Golden on Monday. Fortunately wind speeds were light. Showers in Boulder County were rare with some observed on Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. More frequent downslope wind flow dried things out.

Forecast
The upper level high that blocked our moisture last week will shift to the east and bring back a steady southwesterly moist flow. We expect an increase in shower and thunderstorm activity through the week. Further helping things is a hurricane near Baja California that will be pumping moisture into the Rockies beginning on Sunday. All in all a wetter and cooler week is in the offing.
