Think Metric America

Posted

Dear Editor,

I am literally the stereotype for a right winger. Gun toting, anti-abortion, fiscal conservative NRA member and let me tell you, my DREAM is to see this country once and for all abandon it’s quaint and nearly obsolete “system” (I use the term very loosely) and embrace international standards.

Once you do your homework, you will no doubt realize it’s importance.

You don’t want American jobs outsourced? We NEED to get on board with the rest of the world - like it or not. We are undereducated and obstinate when it comes to SI (aka “the metric system”). Nobody is going to want to buy a widget from a country where they will need special tools or specs to repair or maintain them.

Entering the job market? Since 96% of the globe uses SI for it’s foundational measuring system, it’s beyond challenging for an American to compete when all they know is irrational and quaint weights and measures based off 3 barleycorns, the length of a dead kings foot or a one hour stroll of a Roman soldier.

We are RIDICULOUS for rejecting something as important as an international system of weights and measures when the globe is shrinking around us.

I respectfully ask you to not politicize the metric system. It’s tough enough trying to educate a recalcitrant nation without injecting politics into it.

Knowledge has no political affiliation. This “theory” that the metric system is somehow a globalist plot is foolish.

The roots of the metric system is tied to our founders. The American currency system is metric.

Please stop the rhetoric. SI is efficient and beautiful and it’s about time we adopted it here.

It’s springtime in Georgia. I’m off to buy some snake shot for my 9mm...
