Things to do in Nederland in your teens

NEDERLAND – A popular tourist destination year-round, Nederland still faces a shortage of youth-focused activities. Specifically, there are limited options for teenagers. Most activities in town are geared towards younger children or adults 21 and over.

The Teen Center: This facility in Nederland operates from 4 to 7 p.m. on weekdays. Despite its name, the center primarily caters to younger teens, from sixth to ninth grade. The environment is friendly and respectful, though far from quiet. The staff are welcoming and treat everyone who shows up with kindness. The Teen Center is located at 151 East Street, Nederland.

Eldora Mountain Resort: Located just outside of Nederland, Eldora offers a variety of ski trails suitable for different skill levels and has a friendly staff. It’s a fun destination for teens looking to hang out with friends. However, skiing or snowboarding here can be quite expensive. A season pass starts at $249, $479 for youth even up to $749, and gear can cost anywhere from $600 to $2,000. While Eldora is a great place to visit, its affordability is a challenge for many. Eldora Mountain Resort is located at 2861 Eldora Ski Road, Nederland.

The Community Center: A great spot to burn off some energy with friends, the Community Center features a basketball court and a well-equipped gym. There's also a yoga room if you're in the mood to stretch. At just $5 per person for entry, it’s an affordable option for teens. The Community Center is located at 750 Highway 72, Nederland.

The Nederland Mining Museum: A fascinating glimpse into the town's history, the museum showcases relics from the Caribou Silver Mine era. One standout piece is the 1923 Panama Canal steam shovel, which sits proudly outside the museum. The Mining Museum is located at 200 N. Bridge Street, Nederland. They are closed for winter and will reopen for the summer.

Ideas for Teenage-Centered Activities: An arcade would be a fantastic addition to the town, providing a warm, fun space for teens to gather, socialize, and meet new people. A great location for said arcade is where the bank in Nederland used to be: 26 Peak to Peak Highway, Nederland, or maybe another location on 1st Street and Snyder.

The small size of Nederland makes it challenging to offer a wide range of youth activities, but the town may see more options emerge in the future.
