During these winter nights, I have many a friend who shares the bed with their beloved four pawed companion(s), little—or in some cases, not so little—furry heaters. Our pets curl up with us to stay warm, and to be close, to be part of our pack, especially if we’re away for most of their day.
I’ve heard many a discussion regarding whether a pet should be on the bed or even in the bedroom; sometimes, when that discussion becomes a relationship deal-breaker, the pet wins. In my house, my bed is their bed, with them having several of their own beds throughout the house.
In 2014, a memory foam mattress company did a study asking how many of their customers slept with their pets. 71% of pet people said they slept with their pets; of that, 43% said every night; 23% said sometimes; and 5% said only when their partner was out of town.
Favorite sleeping spots were: 52% at the foot of the bed, on top of the covers; 23% snuggled next to their person; 11% shared a pillow; and 14%...yes, under the covers.
Another study showed 62% of cats sleep with adults, while 13% sleep with children.
My girls and I sleep well throughout the night; but for others, sleeping with their pet can disturb their sleep cycles. Another study showed 53% of dog or cat people indicated their pet disturbed their sleep in some way. If this is the case, it’s best to not sleep with your beloved pet as lack of sleep can cause you to be grumpy and foggy, and can affect your memory, health, looks, and sex life.
And speaking of sex—how does that happen with your pet on the bed watching?! Another survey showed people will put their pets outside the room, will give them a treat to distract them, or let them stay on the bed. For my friends who have a Leonberger, dogs known to weigh in around 170 pounds, I’m thinking outside the room is best!
