Dear Editor,
I moved to Nederland just over three years ago, drawn by the natural beauty of the area and the sense of community I felt every time I visited. After living here for a while now, I’ve come to better understand and appreciate what makes this town so special.
The recent Thanksgiving potluck was a perfect example of Nederland’s welcoming and friendly spirit. As a relative newcomer, I was made to feel right at home among long-time residents who have known each other for decades. There was no divide between “old-timers” and newcomers – just a shared sense of community.
Events like this don’t happen on their own. They require dedication from community organizations and selfless individuals who give their time and talents to build connections. I want to express my gratitude to the volunteers, donors, and staff of groups like Wild Bear Nature Center, Backdoor Theater, TEENS Inc., and so many others. Their hard work crafting educational programs, putting on cultural events, mentoring youth, protecting the environment, and more is what makes Nederland such a special place to live.
As we approach Colorado Gives Day on December 5, I’m reminded that supporting these vital organizations not only benefits our community – it’s also rewarding for the giver. Whether it’s making a financial contribution, volunteering your time, or simply sharing kind words of encouragement, there are so many ways for all of us to give back.
Nederland is the caring, quirky, and welcoming town that it is largely because of our nonprofits and the people who sustain them. Our continued support through Colorado Gives Day and beyond will ensure this unique mountain community remains strong for all of us – old-timers and newcomers alike. I’m proud to call Nederland home and look forward to giving back to the organizations that have given so much to all of us, and I encourage other community members to do the same.
Sincerely,
Brian Curtis
