Recently, someone asked me what I would do if there were only one thing I was stuck doing for the rest of my life. My initial answer was ‘nothing.’ If I had to choose only one thing I enjoyed, I wouldn’t choose any of it. Life would simply feel too incomplete.
Then, I started writing my Discover Colorado column, and it hit me. If I could earn all my living traveling across Colorado and writing about it, I’d drop everything else. It may seem as though I’ve explored many places, but there are so many I’ve yet to visit. Hence, my endless Rocky Mountain bucket list.
Luckily, living in the mountains offers plenty of opportunities to discover new places, some of which are not too far away. One of these places is the town of Kittredge in Jefferson County. It’s located on both sides of Highway 74 between Evergreen and Morrison, making it a great stop on your way to either.
Kittredge is often thought of as a small unincorporated town with a post office and a forest. Yes, these are facts, but there’s more to it than that. One can find cafes, restaurants, shops, and an array of outdoor activities.
One of my favorite things about Kittredge is Bear Creek, which runs through the south side of town. The creek can be enjoyed all year and from just about anywhere. Thanks to a couple of restaurants offering patio seating, one can come close and personal with the creek without hiking.
Kittredge isn’t a drive-through town. It’s a place to grab a bite to eat, take photos, and dive into the local flare. With O’Fallon Park nearby, it’s a perfect location to explore the great outdoors. This magnificent town offers convenient services, including an auto repair shop, a church, a general store, and home remodeling services to name a few.
Another thing I love about Kittredge is its laid back atmosphere. Whether you are inside or outside, there’s a sense of letting go that makes this place feel abundant in relaxation and beauty. Not much literature can be found on Kittredge. If you’re interested in learning more about the town, you just might have to make the trip.
I may not have the luxury of dropping everything I’m doing to travel our magical state, but I get to do it part-time. Who knows? Perhaps, one day life would deem me worthy of such a full-time spectacular accomplishment.
