The Smallest Giant shares new indie-rock with the mountains

Marc Tonglen, Nederland. Haley Gowland, a.k.a The Smallest Giant, has arrived upon the Nederland area music scene. With a mighty footstep held back only from its resonance echo by the hundred-year pandemic and the silence of the falling springtime snow.

Originally hailing from New England and born into a family of drummers, Gowland gravitated toward the guitar and bass as a child, yet it is her voice and musical acuity that moves mountains. Hence, she now chooses to record and release music under the moniker, The Smallest Giant.

Though Haley’s physical frame might be small, her creative expression and multi-layered talents are robust and expansive. As Gowland explains, “I’m much more than a professionally disguised sixteen-year-old in a twenty-six year old’s body. I also score films, record voice over, edit and contribute music to podcasts and perform live whenever possible.” She is the writer, performer and producer and mix engineer behind her new original indie pop solo project that brings light, a little queer, and a plenty unrelenting on audiences far and wide.

The first single The Smallest Giant recently released in 2020 was titled History Repeats, followed thereafter by the indie pop hit, Change. Her third release was an upbeat retelling of times gone by, entitled Back Then. The next two releases slated for distribution are Castle and Anyway. As Haley elaborates, “I’m incredibly excited for these next two releases. It’s a little bit more Teegan & Sarah, Walk the Moon, Kings of Leon, and MisterWives, more of that full on indie alt-rock kind of vibe.”

Haley’s first show here in Nederland was at The Very Nice Brewing Company during a springtime snowstorm in 2019. As she explains it, “Ned is the friendliest, most-quirkiest place I’ve ever been. I always knew I’d end up moving here – I love it here.”
