The rewards of always choosing adventures

Sometimes when I sit down to work on a story, I feel a sense of loss, generally due to writer’s block or overreflecting on life choices. Then, I come across something inspiring, and nothing else seems to matter.

With a background in health and fitness and a great love for outdoor activities, I was thrilled to learn that the Gilpin County Community Center (GCCC) has teamed up with Always Choose Adventures (ACA) to offer outdoor gear rental and more.

Always Choose Adventures is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to serve people by connecting them with the outdoors to improve their physical and mental well-being.

“After being chronically ill most of my childhood and young adult life, I found adventure. Adventure completely transformed my life and introduced me to healthy activities and new relationships from being in the great outdoors. I wanted to share the sense of adventure with everyone,” shares Founder and Executive Director Chantelle Shoaee.

Though ACA has various adventures and events around the state, its headquarters and most of its offerings are now based in Gilpin County. In October 2022, land was purchased with plans for a new program in mind. Camp Always Choose Adventures will commence and be ready for use this summer.

As a nonprofit, the ACA is “always seeking to build new partnerships, leveraging our social media and outdoor community network to benefit grantors and donors.” They also offer free memberships to anyone with a permanent disability and to veterans.

Programs and clinics are underway in Gilpin County. One is the Gilpin County Resident Paddleboarding Clinic for all ages, Sunday, July 30, 2023. Instructors will provide equipment during the donation-based clinic.

All ACA events and programs are adaptable to different needs and limitations. So, no need to contemplate or question if you can participate.

Via programs like Anguish To Adventures, Couch To Trail, ReWild Your Child, Mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, intro to camping, hiking, Leave No Trace, paddleboarding clinics, and the ACA Gear Library, anyone can enjoy the great outdoors.

With too many challenging twists and turns affecting my health, I look forward to getting outside, and it’s nice to know I have more options closer to home.

Always Choose Adventures is located at 250 Norton Drive. You can find them on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/AlwaysChooseAdventures, or you can give them a call at 720-331-2499.
